Ulrich Sieberath is a real symbol for ift Rosenheim, using all his energy to improve the image of the institute and to make sure that the services promoted are at the highest possible level. All these targets were reached, the main task for the future being to make aware the industry representatives and also the final users about the importance of some vital subjects like energy efficiency, proper installation, integration of automation etc. These are some of the topics which the general manager of the institute will address in the following.
-The windows industry has evolved in the last 25 years to a high-tech level. What were the most significant innovations in your opinion?
-The main innovations were the steady improvement in coating technology, the development of triple insulating glass as well as improving the usability and longevity in the glass sector. As regards the thermal insulating joinery, we could speak about improving the system profiles, through new materials, thermal breaks, the development of bonded structures etc. In the hardware area, we assist at an increase of the load capacity, the concealed systems and the maintenance free design, along with the excellent functionality of the sliding structures and new ventilation solutions are representing state of the art.
-What do you think about the future?
-The windows' future is related to the optimization of the process of energy efficiency with even better thermal insulation properties, and also to the higher use of solar energy and very powerful shading system used in conjunction with intelligent mechatronic functions of the joinery. The simple control via smartphone will soon be standard and will significantly improve the living and user comfort and healthy living through natural ventilation. Through the further development of OLED film, we will have the so-called media surfaces, so that we can look at static and moving images on high quality glass, used in the same time as sun and glare protection. Shading elements are already used to generate electricity through the organic photovoltaic films. By developing the insulating systems inserted in glass structure we can control the air loads and increase the overall depth of windows without any problem. One can integrate easily, inexpensively and permanently any functional elements in the IGU space, whether for shading, daylight control or as a temporary heat protection.
-Is the IGU with two sheets of glass outdated and which are the reasons for the installation of three-sheets glazing?
-The traditional product is further optimized and have its very established place, because the argument of low-cost always remains in the conscience of the customer. However, the entire glass field is guided by the development of vacuum glazing solutions, coating technology, the development of new insulation systems and triple glazing, again as a great step forward.
-The frames are always thicker, the glazing heavier and more difficult to support. What does this mean for hardware technology and the efforts of installation?
-The hardware technology is already available for IGU with high weight. However, there are application limits and trade-offs between design and function, which must be known and respected. The troubles of installation can be reduced in many cases by means of appropriate lifting and assembly process. However, in the rehabilitation field are often encountered situations in which the installation is difficult and cumbersome. Overall, the importance of assembling is stillgreatly underestimated by clients and planners and needs more attention in the future.
-Which UW-values are now considered the standard?
-The European standard is based on the values promoted through rules and different announcements. Therefore, first of all, the minimum legal standards applied in Germany according to EnEV and subordinated to improve the energy efficiency mention a value of 1.3 W / sqmK, KfW is promoting a value of 0.95 W/sqmK and passive house windows require an U-value of less than 0.7 W/sqmK. With the advancement of the insulating glass and window constructions, in a few years we will reach certain Uw values below 0.4 W /sqmK.
-The window assumes more and more functions - from the integrated ventilation with heat recovery through to integration of building automation. What does this mean for the installation process?
-Due to the high labor costs, the system approach is becoming harder. For example, the mounting of the window frame using heat-insulating foam is accepted by the market. As for the integration of mechatronic components, these systems will succeed only if the interfaces are as simple and safe as we know it from the computer area, where almost everything works via "plug and play" system. However, the programming, control and connection to the house technology is an important matter for the future. Anyway, we expect an increase in the competence and dynamism. Overall, the importance of the components quality including the ones related to the installation process will continue to need more attention and planning.
-The window replacement is a big market. What solutions will prevail?
-In the renovation market, planning and professional installation are the most important parts, in particular to avoid the thermal bridges, to ensure the necessary air tightness and a secured attachment. In combination with thermal insulation composite systems, the process is often much more complicated, because the windows are mounted in front of the outer wall, through cantilevers and has to absorb higher forces and moments. Is is also very important that the physics changes and a new ventilation plan to be made with the replacement of windows. Regarding the designs, there are no other special requirements compared to the new buildings, except the historical monuments. However, it is certain that through the new window dimensions, the appearance of a building regarding the daylight quality to improve significantly.
-What priorities and strategies arise for the ift Rosenheim?
-The general trend in the construction sector can be described with the words of “transition from energy efficiency to user comfort". Windows and façades are already "Energy Winner" and now it is the customer requests for more comfort and safety to consider. By this, we mean the development of adaptive window and façade systems capable to autonomously react to climatic influences and user habits. For this to happen, it needs intuitive and simple and intelligent controls, auto learning systems, as the speech recognition in the smartphones. Through our expertise and research projects, we intend to improve the usability of this products and thus make people's lives more comfortable and safe, as well as to protect the environment. For this, it needs extensive testing and laboratory facilities as well as competent and committed employees. With our new technology center, we are very well positioned and we can offer our know-how, in an independent way and customer oriented. On this basis, we intend to expand our position nationally and internationally, through more topics and services. This includes, for example, the testing and evaluation of electronic components and the development of online tools for practical application. We also need to follow the unchanged trend towards globalization.
